“Great Little Libraries” is a Scottish charity (SC039321) which raises money to put books in primary schools in disadvantaged parts of Scotland.

In early 2011 we donated £2000 to the inspirational Glencoats Primary School in Ferguslie Park, Paisley. Angela Glassford, headteacher of the school, explains here how that money has been put to use and the benefits she hopes it will bring:

“Here at Glencoats Primary, we were delighted to benefit from the generous donation from Great Little Libraries. The importance of nurturing and developing a love of reading cannot be underestimated. Developing motivation and skills in literacy at an early stage in a child’s life enhances all learning and understanding, as well as opening doors to future opportunities. We have used the donation to buy a wide range of material for all age groups, to enhance our library, fiction and non-fiction, books to appeal to boys and girls as well as some novel sets to bring the joy of “real books” to our core reading programmes. Thank you for your support!”

We have raised money by putting on poetry and music gigs in Edinburgh. We also send volunteers to work in bars at UK music festivals, with Great Little Libraries being paid for every hour they work. We now hope to use the example of our work with Glencoats Primary school as we expand our fund-raising activities, including through applications to charitable trusts with an educational or anti-poverty focus.

When selecting which schools to support Great Little Libraries is guided by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, which can identify the most deprived communities in Scotland. Of course factors such as the willingness of the school to work with the charity will also have an influence.
